Located in the Sendagaya area, the National Noh Theatre opened in 1983 as a dedicated home for noh and kyogen, the austere masked drama and its comic counterpart that date back some six centuries. Its stage follows the classic form, a roofed cedar platform with a bridgeway and a painted pine backdrop, set within a modern auditorium. Performances are slow, ritualistic and deeply atmospheric, and the venue provides explanations to help visitors appreciate the restrained gestures and chanting.
