A much-loved public park in central Chengdu, laid out in the early twentieth century and long a hub of the city's leisurely teahouse culture. Winding paths lead past lakes, bonsai gardens, a monument to a Qing-era railway protest, and open lawns where residents practice tai chi. The Heming Teahouse beside the lotus pond is a famous gathering place where locals sip tea for hours and have their ears cleaned by roving specialists. Visitors join the unhurried scene of card games, dancing and boating.
