The principal city history museum of Chengdu, housed since 2016 in a striking bronze-toned faceted building on Tianfu Square in the heart of the metropolis. Its permanent galleries trace the long story of the Chengdu plain from Neolithic settlement through the Shu kingdoms, the silk and tea trades, and later dynastic life. Highlights include lacquerware, printing blocks and a celebrated collection of shadow puppets. Visitors ascend through chronological floors, pausing at city models and displays on the nearby Dujiangyan irrigation works.
