The excavated tomb of Wang Jian, founder of the Former Shu kingdom in the tenth century, standing beneath a grassy mound in northwestern Chengdu. It is one of the few imperial tombs in China that can be entered and studied above the surface, its vaulted brick chamber remarkably intact. Around the stone coffin platform, a carved band of musicians and dancers depicts a Tang-style court orchestra prized by historians of music. A seated statue of the ruler survives in an inner niche. Visitors descend into the chamber to view these rare reliefs.
