On the outskirts of Kazan in the Staroye Arakchino district stands a colourful architectural experiment begun by artist Ildar Khanov, who envisioned a single complex uniting the symbols of the world's faiths. Domes, spires, minarets and a Star of David rise together in a riot of colour, though the building functions as a cultural monument rather than an active place of worship. Construction continued for decades and remains partly unfinished. Interiors hold painted halls and exhibition spaces.
