Founded in the late sixteenth century to commemorate the defence of Moscow against Crimean raiders, this fortified monastery preserves an ensemble of red-brick churches and towers within thick walls. Its old and new cathedrals bracket a shaded necropolis where nobles, writers and philosophers of imperial Russia are buried, including relics salvaged from demolished city churches. The mix of military architecture, memorial sculpture and quiet grounds draws worshippers and historians alike.
