Freedom Square is one of the largest city squares in Europe, laid out in Kharkiv during the interwar period when the city served as the region's administrative capital. Its vast open expanse is framed by monumental constructivist buildings, most notably the striking Derzhprom complex, an early landmark of reinforced-concrete architecture. Trams and broad avenues converge on the square, which borders a large university and a leafy park. Visitors come for the scale of the space and its bold design.
