This long tree-lined pedestrian avenue is the main promenade of Kaunas, running through the newer part of the city between the old town and the garrison church. Laid out in the nineteenth century and planted with lindens, it is lined with shops, cafes, theatres and interwar modernist buildings that recall the city's period as the provisional capital. Fountains, benches and sculptures punctuate its length. As the social spine of Kaunas, the avenue fills with strollers, buskers and events, especially on warm summer evenings.
