Rising beside the Et'hem Bey Mosque near Skanderbeg Square, this clock tower was built in the early 19th century by Haxhi Ethem Bey and has become a symbol of the Albanian capital. The stone tower stands about 35 metres tall and was for a long time the highest structure in the city. Its mechanism and clock face have been replaced several times, including with a German-made timepiece added in the 20th century. Visitors can climb the internal spiral staircase to a balcony overlooking the central square and surrounding streets.
