The principal collection of Greek fine art from the post-Byzantine era onward, the National Gallery reopened in 2021 after a major expansion and reconstruction near the Hilton in central Athens. Its holdings trace the development of modern Greek painting and sculpture, from the Cretan and Ionian schools through 19th-century academic works to 20th-century modernism, alongside a selection of Western European masters. Bright top-lit galleries display canvases by artists such as Nikolaos Gyzis and Konstantinos Parthenis.
