Crowning the Hill of the Muses opposite the Acropolis, this marble mausoleum was raised around 116 AD in honour of Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos, a prince of the Commagene dynasty and Athenian benefactor. Its curved facade once held statues and a carved frieze depicting a Roman consular procession, part of which survives. The surrounding pine-covered hill is laced with paths designed by architect Dimitris Pikionis, whose hand-laid stonework blends ancient fragments into the landscape.
