Once the potters' quarter of ancient Athens, Kerameikos became the city's most important cemetery, spreading along the banks of the Eridanos stream northwest of the Acropolis. The site preserves stretches of the ancient city wall together with the Dipylon and Sacred Gate, from which processional roads led to Eleusis and the Academy. Grave stelae, carved marble lekythoi and monumental funerary sculptures line the paths, many now displayed in the on-site Oberländer Museum.
