One of the busiest public squares in old Athens, Monastiraki lies at the meeting point of the Plaka and Psyri districts and takes its name from a small monastery church at its centre. The square is flanked by the Ottoman-era Tzistarakis Mosque, the ruins of Hadrian's Library and a metro station whose excavation exposed ancient stream beds and burials now displayed in situ. Radiating from it are the famous flea-market streets crowded with antique dealers, junk shops and stalls.
