Vratnik is the historic hilltop quarter of Sarajevo, ringed by the remnants of Ottoman-era fortifications that once defended the city. Steep cobbled lanes wind between old timber-framed houses toward surviving gates and bastions such as the White and Yellow forts. From the ramparts, sweeping views take in the minarets and church towers of the old town spread along the valley below. Quiet and residential, the neighbourhood preserves the atmosphere of an eighteenth-century walled town within the modern capital.
