This wooden Ottoman-style public fountain is the defining landmark of Baščaršija, the old bazaar square of Sarajevo. A kiosk-like structure with a domed canopy sheltering a drinking basin, it replaced earlier fountains destroyed by fire and became a symbol of the city. Flocks of pigeons crowd the surrounding paving, giving the plaza its popular name of pigeon square. Local legend holds that anyone who drinks from the Sebilj will one day return to Sarajevo, and it remains the most photographed spot in the old town.
