The largest cathedral in Bosnia and Herzegovina, this neo-Gothic Catholic church anchors the pedestrian heart of old Sarajevo. Completed in the late nineteenth century, its twin towers and rose window draw on the great cathedrals of Central Europe, adapted to a modest urban square. The building appears on the flag and seal of the Sarajevo Canton, underlining its role as a city emblem. A statue of Pope John Paul II stands nearby, and the plaza in front is a busy gathering place lined with cafés.
