Dom Square in Szeged is one of the largest public squares in Hungary, laid out in the twentieth century in front of the great Votive Church. It is enclosed on three sides by arcaded university and church buildings whose facades hold the National Pantheon, a gallery of busts and reliefs honouring notable Hungarians. A chiming musical clock marks the passing hours above the arcades. Each summer the square becomes an open-air theatre for the Szeged Open-Air Festival, its broad expanse accommodating large crowds beneath the cathedral towers.
