The Votive Church of Szeged is a monumental twin-towered brick cathedral built in the early twentieth century as a vow of thanks after the devastating flood of 1879 that nearly destroyed the city. Its Neo-Romanesque design dominates Dom Square, one of the largest squares in Hungary, which is enclosed by arcaded university buildings and a musical carillon. The interior is decorated with mosaics and stained glass, and the church contains one of the largest organs in the country. The square hosts open-air performances beneath the tall facade.
