The Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava is the country's principal art institution, housing collections that span Gothic panel painting, Baroque works, and modern Slovak and European art. It occupies a group of connected buildings on the Danube embankment, including a former Baroque barracks bridged by a modernist concrete wing. After a long reconstruction the gallery reopened with expanded exhibition halls and a riverside courtyard. Its holdings trace the visual arts of Slovakia from medieval altarpieces to the twentieth-century avant-garde.
