The Municipal House is Prague's grandest Art Nouveau building, opened in 1912 beside the medieval Powder Tower. Its facade glows with mosaics, wrought iron, and floral ornament, while inside the Smetana Hall serves as a leading concert venue and home of the Prague Symphony Orchestra. Painter Alfons Mucha decorated the Lord Mayor's Hall, and the building hosted the 1918 proclamation of Czechoslovak independence. Cafes, restaurants, and richly detailed salons make it both a working cultural centre and a showcase of early twentieth-century design.
