The Green Gate closes the eastern end of Long Market where it meets the Motława River, a broad Mannerist structure inspired by the town hall of Antwerp. Built in the mid-16th century as a formal residence for visiting monarchs, it was never comfortably lived in and later served various civic uses. Its four arched passageways once let carriages pass through to the waterfront. Today it houses exhibition spaces and offices of the National Museum, and its riverside terrace overlooks the quays, marina and the tall Crane just downstream.
