The Mittlere Brücke is the oldest bridge across the Rhine in Basel, first built of wood and stone in the thirteenth century and long one of the few fixed crossings on the upper river. It joins the two halves of the city, Grossbasel on the high left bank and the lower Kleinbasel opposite, and carries trams and pedestrians between them. A small chapel-like structure stands midway along its span, a reconstruction of the medieval booth once used for executions. The bridge offers a fine view up the river toward the cathedral towers.
