This working museum occupies a restored medieval mill on the St. Alban stream in Basel, once a centre of the city's paper and printing trades. Water still turns the great wheel that drives the pulping hammers, and visitors can dip a mould to make a sheet of paper by hand, then watch it pressed and dried. Four floors carry the story on through typesetting, printing and bookbinding, with presses that can be operated by guests. The mix of live craft and industrial history makes it one of the most hands-on museums in the country.
