Housed in a former country mansion on the northern edge of Lausanne, this museum is devoted to art brut, the raw and untrained work made by people outside the professional art world, including psychiatric patients, prisoners and recluses. Its holdings grew from the collection of the painter Jean Dubuffet, who coined the term and gave the works to the city. Displays in dimly lit galleries present drawings, embroidery, sculpture and elaborate constructions made from found materials. It is one of the most unusual collections in Switzerland.
