This lively square in the centre of Amsterdam takes its name from a bronze statue of Rembrandt that has overlooked it since 1852, the oldest surviving statue in the city. In the garden below, a group of cast figures recreates the painter's Night Watch in three dimensions. Once a butter market, the square is now ringed by cafes, terraces and nightlife venues that stay busy into the small hours. Its central fountain and greenery offer a resting point by day before the evening crowds arrive.
