Spanning the Amstel between Kerkstraat and Nieuwe Kerkstraat, this white wooden drawbridge is among the most recognisable of Amsterdam's many bridges. A crossing has stood here since the seventeenth century, and the current double-leaf bascule design continues to open by hand and machine to let boats pass. In the evening its arch is outlined by rows of small lights reflected in the canal. The bridge features in countless photographs and has appeared in film, making it a favourite spot for a pause during a waterside stroll.
