Occupying a vast seventeenth-century almshouse on the bank of the Amstel, this museum began as a Dutch satellite of the State Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, hosting rotating loans from the Russian collection. Following the severing of that partnership, it was rebranded and now stages exhibitions drawn from Dutch and international collections. The building, once home to elderly women, wraps around a large courtyard garden that is open to the public. Its scale and riverside setting make it one of the grandest exhibition spaces in the city.
