This ancient basilica near Piazza Venezia was founded in the sixth century and rebuilt several times, gaining a double portico and a lavish Baroque interior over the centuries. A ceiling fresco by Baciccia depicts the triumph of the Franciscan order, which has long cared for the church. The tomb of Pope Clement XIV, an early work by the sculptor Canova, stands within, along with an ancient relief eagle set into the portico. Beneath lies a crypt housing relics of the apostles Philip and James, giving the church its dedication.
