Raised around 113 AD to celebrate the emperor Trajan's conquest of Dacia, this marble column stands nearly forty metres tall and is wrapped in a continuous spiral frieze carved with more than two thousand figures. The reliefs unfold like a scroll, depicting the campaigns in remarkable narrative detail and serving as a prime source for the study of Roman military life. A statue of Saint Peter replaced the original figure of Trajan on the summit in the sixteenth century.
