Attached to the Palazzo Venezia at the foot of the Capitoline, this basilica is among the oldest churches in Rome, founded in the fourth century and rebuilt several times. A ninth-century apse mosaic depicting Christ with saints survives above the altar, glowing against the later Baroque and Renaissance additions. A graceful loggia and portico face a small square, and a gilded coffered ceiling covers the nave. Dedicated to the evangelist Mark, it long served the Venetian community around the palace.
