This Jesuit church is famous above all for Andrea Pozzo's ceiling fresco, a dizzying illusionistic composition that seems to open the vault to a swirling heaven of saints and angels. A marble disc set into the floor marks the spot from which the perspective aligns perfectly. When funds for a real dome ran short, Pozzo painted a flat canvas that convincingly mimics a cupola when viewed from a second marked point. The theatrical rococo square outside was laid out to resemble a stage set.
