One of the oldest surviving bridges in Rome, this stone span across the Tiber traces its origins to the second century BC, though it has been rebuilt many times. It is remembered as the site of the battle in 312 AD in which Constantine defeated his rival Maxentius, a turning point in the empire's adoption of Christianity. In recent decades the bridge became a magnet for couples attaching padlocks to its lampposts as tokens of love. Its pedestrian arches and the lively cafes of the surrounding district make it a popular evening gathering spot.
