Tucked against the northern gate of the old city at one corner of the Piazza del Popolo, this Augustinian basilica holds an extraordinary concentration of art. The Cerasi Chapel displays two dramatic Caravaggio canvases, the Conversion of Saint Paul and the Crucifixion of Saint Peter, facing an altarpiece by Annibale Carracci. Raphael designed the Chigi Chapel, later completed by Bernini, while Pinturicchio frescoed the apse. Rebuilt in the fifteenth century and enriched over the following centuries, it forms a compact survey of Roman art.
