Set in a grand hall built for a 1911 exposition beside the Villa Borghese gardens, this national gallery holds Italy's foremost collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century art. Its rooms trace movements from Neoclassicism and Romanticism through the Macchiaioli, Futurism, and the postwar avant-garde, with works by Canova, Modigliani, Boccioni, and de Chirico alongside international figures such as Van Gogh and Cézanne. The bright, spacious galleries and sculpture-filled halls contrast with the ancient focus of most Roman museums.
