Ludovisi Casino dell'Aurora

This small garden pavilion near Via Veneto is famous for holding the only known ceiling painting by Caravaggio, a mural of the gods Jupiter, Neptune, and Pluto executed in oils directly onto plaster. The building also contains a celebrated ceiling fresco of Aurora by Guercino, from which it takes its name. Once part of a vast aristocratic villa largely lost to nineteenth-century development, the casino survives as a rare fragment of that lost estate.
