Opened in 1949 near the top of the Spanish Steps, this theatre became the principal Roman home of large-scale musical revue and later the Italian musical. It is closely tied to the comic and musical tradition of postwar Rome and hosted long runs of popular productions. The relatively modern auditorium seats around 1,500 and is designed for spectacle rather than opera. Its central location off the Via Sistina, within walking distance of the Trinità dei Monti and Via Veneto, keeps it embedded in the entertainment life of the historic centre.
