Standing on the highest of Rome's classical hills, this grand palace was built from the late sixteenth century as a papal summer residence and later served the kings of Italy before becoming the official home of the President of the Republic. Its long facade overlooks a square with an ancient obelisk and colossal statues of the horse tamers. Inside are frescoed halls, tapestries, and a chapel decorated by Guido Reni. Parts of the state apartments open to the public on guided visits.
