This large park in the northern reaches of the city was once a royal estate used by the Italian monarchy as a hunting ground and residence. Rolling and heavily wooded, it preserves a wilder character than the more manicured gardens of central Rome, with pine forests, meadows, ponds, and riding trails. The grounds include stables, a small lake, and traces of ancient catacombs beneath. In summer the park hosts an outdoor music festival by its lake. Its size and greenery make it a favourite of runners and families seeking open space.
