The dramatic centrepiece of Piazza Navona, this fountain was completed by Bernini in 1651 for Pope Innocent X. Four colossal marble figures personify great rivers of the known continents, the Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Río de la Plata, arranged around a rocky base that supports an ancient Egyptian obelisk. Water gushes among the figures amid carved plants and animals, from a horse to a serpent. The theatrical composition ranks among Bernini's masterpieces and gives the elongated square its animated heart.
