At the southern end of Piazza Navona stands this fountain, originally designed by Giacomo della Porta in the sixteenth century and later reworked by Bernini, who added the central figure of a muscular Moor wrestling a dolphin. Surrounded by four tritons in a basin of pink marble, the sculpture gives the fountain its name. The figures now on view are copies, with the originals preserved for protection. Facing the more famous Fountain of the Four Rivers across the long square, it forms part of one of the great Baroque public spaces of the city.
