Dedicated to the martyr Cecilia, patron saint of music, this basilica in the Trastevere district stands over what is believed to be her house. A graceful courtyard with a large antique urn precedes the church, whose apse glows with a ninth-century golden mosaic. Beneath the altar lies Stefano Maderno's tender marble sculpture of the saint's body as it was reportedly found. In an enclosed choir upstairs survives a fragment of Pietro Cavallini's Last Judgement fresco from around 1290, viewable only at limited hours.
