This pedestrian bridge links the historic centre with Trastevere, spanning the Tiber on the foundations of an ancient Roman crossing. Rebuilt in the late fifteenth century under Pope Sixtus IV, from whom it takes its name, it features a distinctive round opening in its central pier that lets floodwater pass and lends it a graceful profile. In the evenings the bridge and the fountain-filled square at its northern end fill with musicians, artists, and people gathering to watch the sunset over the river.
