This lesser-known Baroque church near the Tiber marks the traditional site where the apostle Paul is said to have lodged during his time in Rome. The present building, with a restrained facade and a domed interior decorated with eighteenth-century paintings and stucco, replaced earlier structures on the spot. Beneath it survive rooms of an ancient Roman building, sometimes shown to visitors, that are held by tradition to be Paul's dwelling. Set in a maze of narrow streets, it sees few tourists.
