This sunken square in the city centre exposes the remains of four Republican-era temples, among the oldest in Rome, uncovered during demolition works in the 1920s. The site is also identified with the Curia of Pompey, the hall where Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC. For decades the ruins were best known as a refuge for the city's stray cats, cared for by a resident sanctuary. A recent restoration added walkways that let visitors descend among the columns and altars rather than viewing them only from the street above.
