The oldest Roman bridge in the city still in its original form, this stone arch span was built in 62 BC to connect the left bank of the Tiber with the Tiber Island. Two low relief pillars bearing four-faced heads at one end gave rise to its alternative name, the bridge of the four heads. Remarkably intact after more than two thousand years, it still carries pedestrians across the same course as in antiquity. Its weathered travertine and brick, framing views of the island and the river, make it a favourite subject for photographers.
