The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe occupies a full city block near the Brandenburg Gate and honours the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Designed by architect Peter Eisenman and opened in 2005, it consists of nearly three thousand grey concrete stelae of varying heights arranged in a grid across an undulating ground. Walking between the columns, visitors gradually descend into a disorienting, silent space that grows taller overhead. An underground centre beneath the field documents individual families through letters and testimony.
