These covered bridges span the channels where the Ill divides at the western edge of the old town, guarded by three surviving medieval towers. Although the wooden roofs that gave them their name are long gone, the fortified stone towers remain iconic sentinels over the water. They formed part of the city's earliest defensive line before the outer ramparts were built. Framed against the half-timbered houses of Petite France and reflected in the calm channels, they are among the most recognisable sights in Strasbourg.
