In the historic Jewish quarter of the Marais, this synagogue is a rare Art Nouveau religious building, designed in the early 20th century by the architect Hector Guimard, famous for the Paris Métro entrances. Its undulating stone facade, curved lines and iron detailing bring the movement's sinuous style to a place of worship. Built for an Orthodox congregation of Eastern European origin, it was damaged during the Second World War and later restored. The narrow street setting heightens the drama of its rippling frontage.
