The Millennium Bridge is a sleek steel pedestrian suspension bridge linking St Paul's Cathedral with Tate Modern across the Thames, opened in 2000. Its low, blade-like profile was designed to be almost invisible in silhouette. On its first opening day the deck swayed alarmingly as crowds unconsciously fell into step, forcing an immediate closure and earning it the nickname the Wobbly Bridge until dampers were fitted. Now stable, it offers a fine walking approach to the cathedral dome.
