This City of London church, rebuilt by Christopher Wren in the 1670s, is often regarded as a rehearsal for his dome at St Paul's. A coffered dome rises on eight arches above a square plan, flooding the interior with light in a scheme of remarkable geometric clarity. At its centre sits a large circular stone altar carved by Henry Moore, installed in the twentieth century and once the subject of legal dispute. The church is also the birthplace of the Samaritans helpline, founded here in 1953.
